HARTFORD — Bob Calawa, 88, a resident of Hartford and a former resident of Chelmsford, Mass., passed away peacefully after a period of declining health at his home in Maine on Saturday, May 6. He was the beloved husband of Victoria “Vicki” (Aveni) Cunningham of Hartford, with whom he would have celebrated 30 years of marriage in July.
Born in Nashua, N.H., on Oct. 16, 1928, he was a son of the late Oscar A. and Alice (Pontbriand) Calawa.
Bob earned Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science degrees in physics from the University of New Hampshire and was employed as physicist at MIT Lincoln Laboratories until his retirement.
In addition to his wife, Vicki, Bob is survived by his beloved children, Stephen Calawa and wife, Linda, Christopher Calawa and wife, Christine, Catherine Astolfi and husband, David, Donald Calawa and wife, Donna, Daniel Calawa, Virginia Gutierrez and husband, Guillermo, Martin Calawa and wife, Mary, Nancy Polley and husband, Brian, and Richard Calawa and wife, Kristine; beloved step-children, Paul Cunningham and wife, Lisa, Joanne Crawford and husband, Barry, Karen Cunningham, Marie Cunningham and their families; two sisters, Rita Therrien and Germaine Calawa-Hill; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was the former husband of the late Joan Calawa and he was the brother of the late Andy Calawa.
