The Maine High School Hockey Class A Coaches Association announced Monday the four finalists for the Travis Roy Award, and the EL defenseman/forward is among them.
The other finalists for the award are forward Matt Caron of Scarborough, forward Trevor DeLaite of Bangor, and defenseman Walsh Troiani-Gagner of Thornton Academy in Saco.
Steele was a captain this year for the Red Eddies, whose season came to an end on Saturday in the Class A North regional semifinals. He has earned multiple first-team All-State honors, and finished his career with more than 100 points.
In his senior season Steele led all Class A players with 27 assists during the regular season, and added three goals for a team-high 30 points. He added a goal and an assist in two playoff games.
Steele has a chance to be the third EL player to win the Travis Roy Award. Previous winners were Josh Benson in 2002 and Kyle Smith in 2004. Mat Gordon was a finalist for the award in 2010.
The winner of this year’s award will be announced at the annual All-State awards banquet scheduled for March 13 at Ramada Inn in Lewiston.
