PORTLAND — No. 4 Brunswick avenged a double-digit loss during the regular season and rallied from an early 10-point deficit to stun No. 1 Greely, 65-52, in the Class A South boys’ semifinals Wednesday night at Cross Insurance Arena.

Brunswick will face Falmouth for the regional title at 9 p.m. Saturday.

Greely jumped out to a 12-2 lead before the Dragons delivered 10 consecutive points to tie it.

Buzzer-beaters to end the second and third quarters kept Brunswick rolling. Thomas Hanson’s putback made it 23-17 at the half, and a 3-pointer from Caleb Cost ratcheted the lead to 39-30 after three.

Oceanside 66, Hampden 63

AUGUSTA — No. 5 Oceanside jumped out to a 10-0 lead Wednesday night, then withstood numerous challenges from top-seeded, defending Class A champion Hampden to pull off a 66-63 stunner in the North semifinals at Augusta Civic Center.

Sam Atwood scored 16 points to lead the Mariners (15-5), who will face midcoast rival Medomak Valley on Friday afternoon. Nick Mazurek added 14 points. Roley Sprague had 13.

Ian McIntyre led all scorers with 24 points for Hampden (19-1), whose star point guard, Nick Gilpin, was hobbled after a hard collision and crash to the floor early in the game.

Hampden closed the gap to 37-36 early in the third quarter, but Oceanside pulled away again with the help of 3-point proficiency. The Mariners hit 11, one shy of the Class A North single-game record.

Medomak Valley 48, Brewer 31

AUGUSTA — Medomak Valley held Brewer to 10 points in the first half on Wednesday night, and Nick DePatsy scored 14 points after intermission to help the No. 3 Panthers polish off a 48-31 win over the No. 2 Brewer Witches in a Class A North boys’ semifinal.

DePatsy only had one point at halftime, when Medomak led 19-10.

Cam Allaire and Kyle Donlin scored 11 points apiece to supplement DePatsy’s 15 for the Panthers (17-3), who will play for their second consecutive regional title at 3 p.m. Friday. Medomak was Class B North champion a year ago.

Brewer (15-5) got 14 points from Kobe Rogerson.

Class D Boys

Valley 60, Greenville 45

AUGUSTA — The Class D boys’ basketball tournament surely looks like the Valley Invitational of old.

Led by future University of Maine baseball player Cody Laweryson, who rolled up 31 points and 12 rebounds, No. 1 Valley cruised to a 60-45 semifinal victory over No. 4 Greenville on Wednesday at Augusta Civic Center.

Valley (19-0), which dominated the division while winning 101 consecutive games in the early years of this century, takes on relative newcomer Seacoast Christian of Berwick for the title at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Nathan Ames, Collin Miller and Austin Cates scored eight points apiece for the Cavaliers, who led by six at the half and extended the margin with a 21-10 gain in the third quarter. Laweryson scored a dozen in that period.

Nick Foley led the Lakers with 14 points. Tim White added 10.

Seacoast Christian 63, Islesboro 53

AUGUSTA — Seacoast Christian of Berwick will be happy to make the 200-mile round trip commute from the state’s southern tip one more time.

The third-seeded Guardians are in their first-ever Class D South regional title game after taking out No. 7 Islesboro, 63-53, in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Sky Archer scored 18 points to lead Seacoast Christian. Tim Yeaton, who hit the game-winning basket against Vinalhaven in the quarterfinals, added 17. Caleb LaCroix chipped in 14.

Seacoast increased its six-point halftime lead to 14 in the third quarter.

Eight 3-pointers kept the Eagles in it. Forrest Boucher topped Islesboro with 22 points. Jake Pelligrino added 12, Avery Grindle 10 and John Runnion-Bareford nine.

Class A Girls

Messalonskee 55, Gardiner 47

AUGUSTA — Sophie Holmes staked No. 2 Messalonskee to a double-digit lead in the first quarter, and the Eagles denied a late charge from No. 3 Gardiner to close out a 55-47 victory in the Class A North semifinals on Wednesday.

The Eagles will meet undefeated No. 1 Lawrence in the final at 1 p.m. Friday.

Holmes finished with 24 points for the Eagles, who led 19-9 out of the gate, 29-17 at the half and 47-32 at the end of three. She did all her scoring in those chapters.

Lauren Chadwick and Leslie Stevens hit 3-pointers to key a modest comeback by the Tigers. Chadwick concluded with 17 points.

McKenna Brodeur added 13 points and Ally Turner tallied 10 for Messalonskee.

Lawrence 55, Hampden 26

AUGUSTA — No. 1 Lawrence held No. 5 Hampden to eight points in the first half on Wednesday afternoon, and the undefeated Bulldogs cruised into the Class A North girls’ basketball championship round with a 55-26 semifinal victory.

Nia Irving scored 21 points, including an 11-for-13 effort from the free-throw line. By contrast, Hampden attempted only three free throws in the game.

Dominique Lewis drained four 3-pointers in the second half and finished with 15 points. Hunter Mercier added eight.

It was 16-2 after eight minutes and 26-8 at the break.

Marissa Gilpin (seven points) and Peyton Smith (six) were the only Broncos with more than one field goal.
