FARMINGTON — The Arts Institute of Western Maine has announced that Karyl Condit is retiring as president of the board of directors after serving for three years and has been succeeded as president by new board member Burt Knapp.

Sandra Keith has retired as board secretary and has been succeeded by Jane Parker as recording and corresponding secretary. Ellie Hopkins was elected as the new vice president.

Three members have stepped down from the board. Emily Bilodeau has served for five years, setting up the AIWM’s web page and Facebook listing and networking with the Farmington Downtown Association.

Nancy Knapp has served for three years, contributing to publicity and community coordination, and Eileen Kreutz has served for three years as a link with Gold Leaf, coordination with UMF and publicity.

Five new members are succeeding them: Burt Knapp, Malcolm Porter, Dorothy Beeuwkes, John McKim and Wendy Oakley. These new members join with continuing board members Treasurer Camilla Cai, Karyl Condit, Reid Byers, Phil and Sandy Keith, Bruce McInnes, Jane Parker, Ellie Hopkins, Carolyn Drugge and Rod Prior.

The institute also benefits from a group of “Friends of AIWM,” who provide support with programming, regional arts calendar development and consulting: past board member Milton Kidd, Katherine and John Sytsma and Ed David.

The institute board, at the yearly meeting for members on Feb. 7 at Old South Church, reviewed the budget and finances, programs for 2015 and projected programs from 2016, growing membership, efforts to collaborate with regional arts organizations and schools and colleges to reach a larger audience, and improvements in organizational goals and structure.

The board celebrated Karyl Condit and thanked her for her service and guidance in structural improvement, membership growth, growth in community and foundation support and growing coordination with area schools, colleges and arts organizations.

Gratitude was expressed to retiring officers and members of the volunteer board for their commitment, energy and efforts in bringing outstanding arts and music programming to Farmington. The board also emphasized its appreciation for the generosity of members and donors, particularly for the support of the University of Maine Farmington.

Highlights of the 2015 season included programs by Maine Mountain Chamber Music, a program of youth performers from the Farmington area, two programs in coordination with the University of Maine Farmington, the Larchmere String Quartet and the Water Bears Confabulum, the Halloween Art Fair, the Asylum Saxophone Quartet, New Jersey harpsichordist Gavin Black, Rock My Soul Gospel Singers and the women’s drumming group Inanna.

The 2016 season will feature, in addition to last month’s family concert with Martin Swinger, Farmington’s clarinet virtuoso Karen Beacham with pianist Martin Perry, a weeklong visit by the New York-based piano and percussion duo Synchronicity, the early music group St. Mary Schola, two programs by Maine Mountain Chamber Music, a return visit by pianist Laura Kargul of the University of Southern Maine and the July 4th weekend return of Bruce McInnes’ Mastersingers USA to celebrate his 80th birthday and the bicentennial of the town of Weld.
