The Edward Little senior went up against Lewiston’s Caleb Lebrun in the 50-yard freestyle, but the race ended in a tie at 25.06.
That didn’t sit well with Charest.
At the end of the meet, Charest suggested an unofficial 50-yard swim off between himself and Cwik. It came down to the wire again, with Charest on top.
But that’s the way it went for the Blue Devils, who won in the boys’ and girls’ meets with winning scores 95-47 and and 93-71, respectively. It was the season finale for both teams.
“We expected to (win both of them),” Lewiston coach Troy Boutin. “I think we did a good job putting a meet together. Both teams swam well, and we ended up victorious.
“It was such a fun time,” Charest said. “It was my last time so I did my best. I am proud of my results and they are my best times this year.
“Michal and Caleb both tied in the 50 free and I thought it was an amazing race. But Michal and Caleb said, ‘We can’t leave it like this. We have to have a winner. So we had a great race at the end. I loved all the cheering.”
Cwik had his take on the unofficial compromise.
“(Caleb’s) coach insisted. We had to, it was too perfect a tie. It was a really good time with really good friends,” Cwik said.
Charest was the frontrunner in two individual races, coming out on top with a victory in 200 individual medley with a time of 2:06.44 and the in the 100-yard breaststroke against Cwik with a time of 1:02.2.
While Charest collected three victories, including helping his team win the 200-yard medley relay with 1:50.71, Maggie Chirayath also came away with three wins.
The Edward Little junior was tough to beat in all three events. Chirayath won the 200 freestlye (2:09.39), the 100 butterfly (1:05.91) and helped the Red Eddies win the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:34.19).
Charest’s and Chirayath’s outstanding performances came with individual awards. Charest was presented with the Chris Campbell Award and Chirayath received the Leslie Martin Award. Campbell swam for EL and Martin was a member of the Lewiston swim team.
“It was awesome,” Chirayath said. “I know tons of people from both teams and we are also on the same Y team. It was great. (The meet) is awesome. It is the best one all year.”
For Scott Morrison, senior night and the final meet of the year with EL’s crosstown rivals is always a good time.
“We had some awesome swims. Maggie Chirayath, Michal Cwik, both those kids, even those other kids, we had so many best times tonight,” Morrison said. “They swam really, really well. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
