MONMOUTH — The Monmouth Weekend Backpack Program, whose mission is to provide food over the weekend for families in need, is partnering with Families Helping Families Food and Fuel Assistance during the “Beat Cabin Fever” events.

Events include the Chili Chowder Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 30, at Monmouth Fish & Game and the annual quilt raffle. The quilt is on display at Apple Valley Bakery on Main Street and during events around town in the coming weeks. All proceeds from the sale of the “Pastel Tumblers” quilt will go to the Monmouth Weekend Backpack Program.

Quilt raffle tickets cost $3 for one or $5 for two.

The program, which began in fall 2015, is in partnership with the Rural Community Action Ministry, H. L. Cottrell School, Monmouth Food Bank and the United Church of Monmouth.

The program provides easy-to-carry bags of nutritious and easy-to-prepare foods, which are sent home with children at the end of the school week. Information and sign-up forms are available through Deborah Emery, principal of Henry L. Cottrell School. Call 207-933-4426 for information.

All money for the program comes from donations. Volunteers are welcome, and those interested may call 207-441-7071.

To donate to the program, send a check to Monmouth Weekend Backpack Program, P.O.Box 98, Monmouth, ME 04259.
