LEWISTON — The Lewiston Public Library usually gets its fair share of people looking for help with their with new tablets and e-book readers; the staff just decided to make it a bit more formal this Christmas season.

Residents gifting a new tablet computer or e-book reader this year can bring it to the library for a free coupon offering a one-hour tutoring session plus special library-themed gift wrapping.

“We get people who come in after Christmas ever year with a new tablet, who just say ‘Here!'” said Ruby Jones, a library technician. “They got it as a gift, but now their kid has flown back home to California or wherever and they need help setting it up.”

Lewiston Adult Services Librarian Marcela Peres said the staff can help set up any variety of tablet or e-book reader, from an Amazon Kindle to an iPad to an Android. They’ll help the owners download and find new books, set up their email and other apps, she said.

The service is always free, Peres said. Staff started offering the coupons as a way to draw attention to the service.

“We see a lot of those regularly in general,” Peres said. “We’ve been doing one-on-one appointments for about two years at this point. And that’s open any time of the year. We give them an hour initially, to help with the things they need. And we can do a second or third appointment to help them with other things, if they need it.”
