ANSWER: According to a press release from Girl Power Fitness at 74 Westminster St. in Lewiston, Bokwa is a new and completely different approach to group exercise that is rapidly spreading across the globe. Bokwa participants draw letters and numbers with their feet while performing an energizing and addictive cardio workout routine while listening to today’s most popular music.

Because Bokwa steps are structured and based on the forms of letters and numbers, doing Bokwa does not require you to count steps, like a traditional 8-count followed by most dance fitness programs. Simply feel the music and freely move with the beat and the dozens of other class participants that are sharing the energy and excitement with you. Once you know the step, you own it and can do it without following an instructor’s personal choreography.

Because the steps follow the same structure, whether you are doing it in Taiwan, Australia, England or the U.S., Bokwa is truly universal. The music is energizing and addictive and it is likely the same feel-good songs you listen to in your car. Because of the energizing music, the fun and predictable steps and great motivation coming from people moving together to music, participants become addicted to Bokwa.

You would not even realize you were burning up to 1,200 calories in one workout. The next class is from 5:30-6:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7. Girl Power Fitness is located in the Andy Valley Gymnastics building.

From January through May, band members meet every Wednesday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the High Street Congregational Church, Auburn. Membership requires limited conflicts with the group’s schedule of weekly Wednesday rehearsals and concerts, and musicians must have their own instruments.

From mid-June through late August, the band presents weekly Wednesday evening concerts. Weather permitting, these free, 75-minute performances take place at Festival Plaza in downtown Auburn. In the case of inclement weather, concerts take place indoors at the Franco Center in Lewiston. A different selection of music is featured each week, appealing to audiences both young and old. The 2016 summer concert series is expected to begin on June 15th, and run through August 24th.

Additional information about the group is posted on the band’s web site: www.auburncommunityband.com.

Interested musicians are asked to call Simon at 207-782-3917 prior to attending their first rehearsal.
