BETHEL — The Bethel Historical Society will kick off December with its annual Christmas at the Mason House celebration, Executive Director Randall Bennett said Thursday afternoon.
Bennett said the celebration has been a staple event for the society over the past three decades because of its unique ambiance.
“It’s the only time of the year when the period rooms are illuminated by candlelight,” he said. “Since it gets dark earlier in the day around this time of year, the candlelight adds a lot to the evening. The combination of the candlelit rooms, the fire in the fireplaces, the smell of cider and the sound of live music in the parlor makes it a memorable evening.
“It’s a free holiday open house with refreshments and live music by Conni St. Pierre on the harp,” Bennett said. “Some people have been coming for years to Christmas at the Mason House.”
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, some of our members would portray the Mason family as part of the celebration, he said. “Now, we try and focus on the museum itself during the celebration.”
