BRISTOL — A Maine man who served as chancellor of Higher Education for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for several years in the 1970s before becoming chancellor of the University of Maine System has died at age 85.

Patrick Edward McCarthy, who led the UMaine system from 1975 to 1986, died Oct. 13 at his home on Christmas Cove in Bristol after a heart attack.

The Rumford native served in the Marines after graduating from Bridgton Academy. He attended Dartmouth College, the University of Maine and Harvard University.

Pastimes after his 1995 retirement after serving as president of the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions included cooking, boating, poetry, painting and fly-fishing.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Monday, and a celebration of his life will be held next summer.
