1918 – 2015

LEWISTON — Shirley R. Thiriet, 96, of Lisbon passed away on Monday, Sept. 28, at Central Maine Medical Center, following a heart attack a few days prior at her home.

She was born on Dec. 24, 1918, in Lewiston, the daughter of Emile Marcoux and Anna McCarthy. Shirley was raised in Lewiston and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1937. She graduated from St. Mary’s Nursing School in 1940.

Shirley went on to serve the U.S. in Europe during World War II as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. Following the war, she worked as an industrial nurse at Knapp Shoe until she retired.

Shirley married the love of her life, Jean Thiriet, in 1966 and they enjoyed many years traveling together. Shirley and Jean maintained a home in Lewiston and Argenteuil, France, and during the winters, they stayed with family in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

In later years, Shirley moved from her house in Lewiston to Farwell Mill in Lisbon, where she lived out the remainder of her life, thanks to a few close friends who lived there as well and truly made a positive impact on her life by assisting her whenever needed. She was an active member of Lewiston, Auburn, Sabattus and MTM senior groups. She made many friends and enjoyed their regular activities.

Shirley was a caring and loving woman with a generous heart. She had a great sense of humor and will be greatly missed by all her friends and family.

Shirley will be deeply missed by her grandson, Todd Marcoux, his wife, Ellen, and their children, Amanda and Brandon of Pepperell, Mass. She will also be greatly missed by her loving sister, Dora Dick of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; as well as her brother, Paul Marcoux and his wife, Marie, of Cumming, Ga. Shirley had many nieces and nephews whose lives she touched and who will miss her greatly. She also had three stepchildren in France, Henry Thiriet, Jean Thiriet and Didier Save.

Shirley was predeceased by her brother, Dan Marcoux; her sisters, Yvonne Worth and Bette Scalia; her husband, Jean Thiriet; and her son, Ronald Marcoux.

Shirley simply wishes her friends and family remember her with love and kindness. Guess what, Shirley — we all certainly do — and you will be remembered forever accordingly.
