RUMFORD  — When Chelsea Allison got an opportunity on a breakaway,  she  thought of her team and what a victory would mean to Mountain Valley.

The junior forward scored on a breakaway with nine seconds left to play as the Falcons got back on track with a 3-2 win against  stunned Lisbon in a field hockey game at the Hosmer Field Complex.

It was an important matchup because Mountain Valley and Lisbon were ranked sixth and eighth, respectively, in Class C Heal Points.

The eventual winning play had actually materialized when Lexi Duguay intercepted a pass beyond midfield and began dribbling the ball up the ally near the left sideline. She continued advancing the ball and Allison alertly maintained running toward the left post. Duguay advanced a pass and Allison cut right to dodge a defender and flicked a shot past Lisbon goalie Mikaylia Harnden (nine saves).

“We had lost a few close games. So I knew that I wanted this win for my team,” said Allison, who scored off a Duguay crossing pass with 4:34 remaining in the first half. “When Lexi passed it ahead, the only thought on my mind at that point was to score. A Lisbon defender came over, but I kept moving forward.”

The dramatic ending derailed the Greyhounds who had fought back to gain momentum in the second half. Mallory Fairbanks scored her second goal with 6:02 left to play. Chase Collier rushed down the right side and sent a blistering crossing pass. Sydney Plourde deflected the ball over to Fairbanks on the left post and she drilled it past Falcon goalie Aylssa Akers (seven saves).

“We have gone through peaks and valleys,” said Lisbon coach Julie Petrie , who has returned to the team following the birth of twin babies last month.”We played really well for the first 10 minutes of the second half, but even when we fell behind, the team didn’t need to let down and be content.”

Mountain Valley (7-4) broke a 1-1 tie when Duguay maintained possession of the ball with some nifty stick work and one-timed a shot past Harnden with 18:30 left to play. Moments earlier, Duguay shot had hit the left post.

Lisbon (2-8) heeded the message of the fiery Petrie during a timeout and resumed with inspired play.

“I was prepared for Lisbon to be much better,” Mountain Valley coach Melissa Forbes said. “I think that first goal by Lisbon served to wake-up my girls. We needed to be quicker, both passing and shooting and go to the ball.”

Fairbanks opened the scoring by converting a Plourde pass 7:34 into the game. Falcon defenders Makayla Burgess and sweeper Liza White packed it in. Senior Maddie Kaubry helped dig loose ball out to clear the zone. “We used a new formation, today,” Petrie said. “We wanted to get the ball, in to the middle and take (advantage) of our speed. They play better when (action) is in the middle and we had a couple nice crosses.”
