LEWISTON — Sister Marie Ange Cantin, OSU, 92, passed away at St. Mary’s dYouville Pavilion, Lewiston, on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
Marie Ange was born Aug. 11, 1923, the daughter of Abdias Cantin and Laura (Sevigny) Cantin. She received her elementary education at Holy Family School in Sanford and her secondary education at St. Ignatius High School (grades nine and 10) and at Mount Merici Academy, Waterville, (grades 11 and 12) and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Joseph’s College.
On Aug. 27, 1940, Marie Ange entered the Ursuline Novitiate in Waterville, and was given the religious name Marie Clement, pronounced her first religious vows in 1943, and final vows in 1946.
Throughout her religious life, her ministry was teaching young children, which she did for 54 years. She was a very dedicated teacher, loved her students and was in turn, dearly loved by them. She taught school in the Sanford, Waterville, Brunswick, Lewiston and Skowhegan areas.
In her retirement, Sister served for many years as director of activities at the Merici Care Center, Waterville, and also served as community councilor.
In her later years, she moved to St. Mary’s Residences, Lewiston, becoming an active participant in most activities. Due to ill health, she eventually transferred to d’Youville Pavilion. Sister lived her life with great serenity, faith, peace and complete surrender to God.
She is survived by one sister, Bertha Cantin of Sanford; and also by two sisters-in-law, Rita and Doris; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Sister Marie Marc (Lucille), Rita Roux and Annette Laferty; and three brothers, Josaphat, Arthur and Leo.
The Ursuline Sisters and Sister’s family members wish to thank the staff at St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion, 4th floor for their devoted care for Sr. Marie Clement.
