ROXBURY — The Board of Selectmen voted 3-0 Tuesday to schedule a workshop on Oct. 15 to discuss ways that the town can stop speeding motorists near Roxbury Pond.
At the board’s Aug. 25 meeting, resident Stan Kaubris said that throughout the summer he noticed “a large number of cars and four-wheelers driving crazy and way over the speed limit.”
During the board’s Sept. 8 meeting, resident Heidi Poulin sent a letter to the board, seconding Kaubris’ opinion about vehicles speeding near Roxbury Pond.
Options mentioned by Kaubris and other residents included the increase of police presence in Roxbury and the installation of speed bumps.
Selectman Tim Derouche said Tuesday evening that the board should consider scheduling a workshop for residents to attend so they can start “gathering information before our annual town meeting in March.”
“I think it’ll be good to get residents together to discuss the different options that are out there,” Derouche said. “There are pros and cons to every option, and this will help us get the ball rolling.”
Near the beginning of the meeting, Kaubris said that he did some research and disagreed with the speed bump estimate that the selectmen came up with during their Sept. 8 meeting.
“At the last meeting, you guys said that a speed bump would cost between $3,000 and $4,000,” Kaubris said. “I did some research and came up with a different number.”
Kaubris said that he found speed bumps made of rubber that could be temporarily installed for $960.40.
“I don’t think we really need speed bumps in town all year,” Kaubris said. “It seems like we have the biggest problems during the summer months, from May 30 to September 10. I think after September 10, we wouldn’t need speed bumps.”
Another resident asked the selectmen if they should wait until next summer to host a workshop so that Roxbury’s summer residents could speak their minds.
Derouche pointed out that the board was attempting to get as much information as possible before their March 2016 town meeting.
“Right now, we have no money in the budget for a speed bump or anything like that,” he said. “We’re trying to get information so we can make a decision in March. That way, we could move forward with this.”
The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at the Roxbury Town Office.
