WISCASSET — The first two games of the Mountain Valley Conference girls’ high school soccer season saw Lisbon miss chance after scoring chance in losses to Oak Hill and Boothbay

The Greyhounds righted the ship a bit in a win over Dirigo on Monday, and seemed to really find their flow on Thursday, downing Wiscasset under the lights, 5-0.

The win gives Lisbon a 2-2 mark, while the Wolverines fell to 1-4.

In this one, the tandem of Lisbon’s Deliah Schreiber and Emma Houle provided the first-half offensive punch, sending each other on breakaways for a goal each as the Greyhounds claimed a 2-0 halftime lead.

“The first two games of the season we were right there to win them,” said Lisbon coach Jake Gentle, whose Greyhounds visit Monmouth Academy on Saturday at 10 a.m. “We just didn’t play two halves in those games. Give credit to those teams. Tonight we played a little bit better in the second half after a solid first half.”

Lisbon jumped out quickly, getting a Schreiber goal off a Houle lead pass just 6:39 into the game.

Moments later, Wiscasset goaltender Lindsey Gordon was injured after a collision with a Lisbon forward. She was taken to an area hospital, forcing Wiscasset coach Duane Goud to bring in backup netminder Arie Mills.

The Wolverines netminder was tested quickly, as Houle broke in along off a Schreiber pass. Houle sent the shot high under the cross bar for a 2-0 lead.

“The first goal hit us a bit, and we got caught watching the through-ball a couple times defensively,” Goud said.

“We work very well together and make passes that put us through,” said Houle, who moved up to the attack after striker Katherin George left the game with a sore knee early in the opening frame.

“Emma is a lot quicker than me, so I can play the through-ball to her, and she does the same for me,” said Schreiber. “She reads the ball really well. Things were wide open in the middle, and she is able to get there.”

“We had to attack the left side of the field with Emma’s speed, and they really work well together,” Gentle said. “When Katherin came out, Emma was able to step up and put one into the net. She has missed a lot of chances early in the season, so it was nice to see her put that in.”

Mills was solid throughout the remainder of the first half. She finished the contest with 11 saves.

“I thought we continued to play right to the end. We have some of those bad games, 10-0, 9-0, and I thought we came out to play tonight,” Goud said. “I thought Arie played well when she came into goal in her first game. These girls will never give up, and I hope they continue to have that drive. It will take them a long way this year and next.”

Lisbon received a scare with 16:29 remaining in the first half when Schreiber and Mills collided. Schreiber was helped to her bench and remained on the sidelines for the remainder of the first half. The Greyhounds struggled to regain their rhythm.

“When (Deliah) is not out there, our girls are trying to find themselves,” said Gentle. “They feed off of her. When she is not out there, they have to step up in those spots.”

Schreiber returns

With 34:17 remaining in the second half, Schreiber and Houle reentered the game. The move paid immediate dividends as Schreiber tallied a pair of goals 2:03 apart for a 4-0 Lisbon lead.

“I wanted to make sure that we didn’t allow them a goal and to get down on ourselves,” said Schreiber. “I knew if we could get the next one that we could solidify the win.”

Schreiber’s fourth goal completed the scoring with 12:32 remaining.

“We turned it on pretty well offensively, and our defense Chandler (Riordan), Sydney (Douglas) and Abby (Gamache), played really well,” Gentle said. “When we play balanced, we are a tough team.”

Lisbon finished with a 23-9 shot advantage and led in corner kicks 7-0. Greyhound netminder Ali Sult turned aside five shots.

The Wolverines are slated to visit Madison on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
