1926 – 2015

ANDOVER — Lorena C. Simmons, 88, died Saturday, Sept. 12, at her residence on South Main Street, Andover.

She was born in Andover on Dec. 18, 1926, the daughter of Edgar and Florena (Cole) Cushing and graduated from Andover High School, Class of 1944 as class valedictorian.

Over the years, she worked at the Andover Elementary School as a librarian, the Andover Town Office in the SETA Program and as a nanny. She also worked for Day’s Jewelry Store in Rumford, and for the U.S. Post Office in East Andover until retirement as postmaster.

Lorena was an active member of the Calvary Bible Church and the East Andover Community Club. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, sewing, puzzles, bird-watching, crosswords, gardening, yard sales and spending time with her family and friends.

She was married in Bethel on Sept. 26, 1948, to David F. Simmons, who died Sept. 11, 1972.

Survivors include daughters, Victoria Meisner and husband, Marshall, and Rebecca Nickerson and husband, Bert, of Andover; a son, Bruce Simmons of Andover; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, William “Buddy” Cushing; and a sister, Thelma Remington.
