PORTLAND — The Maine Historical Society will honor four Mills siblings for their “extraordinary commitment to public service” with the Maine History Maker Award this month.

Dora, Janet, Peter and Paul Mills, who were raised in Farmington, will be presented the award at the Maine Historical Society’s Annual Celebration on Monday, Sept. 28, at Abromson Center at the University of Southern Maine. The celebration is from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

“The Mills siblings were chosen for their extraordinary commitment to public service, and the influence of this work on both a broad range of present-day Maine culture and economy, as well as the shaping of Maine’s future,” Communications Manager Dan D’Ippolito said.

“The Mills family represents a wide swath of Maine culture and economy —  spanning politics, education, civil service, community engagement and development, law, government and public health,” according to a news release.

Janet Mills is Maine Attorney General; Peter Mills is executive director of the Maine Turnpike Authority and a former state representative; Paul Mills is an attorney at the Farmington law firm Mills & Mills; and Dora Mills is former public health director for the state and current vice president for clinical affairs at the University of New England.

The two previous award recipients are Mert Henry, a retired lawyer and political strategist, and Vin Veroneau, president and CEO of J.B. Brown & Sons Co. 

The Sept. 28 program includes a reception with light refreshments, followed by the award presentation and a panel discussion titled, “Towards Maine’s Future.” The discussion will be moderated by Steve Bromage, society executive director.

The public is invited to attend. Tickets are $50 per person and must be reserved by Sept. 25 online at MaineHistoryMakerAward2015.eventbrite.com

The Maine Historical Society in downtown Portland includes the Wadsworth-Longfellow House and Longfellow Garden, a museum and store, the Brown Library and Maine Memory Network, he said.

“MHS  preserves the heritage and history of Maine, the stories of Maine people, the traditions of Maine communities and the record of Maine’s place in a changing world,” D’Ippolito said.
