1951 – 2015
LEWISTON — William Longacre, 64, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 30, at Central Maine Medical Center, surrounded by his five children.
He was born Feb. 11, 1951, in Mexico City, Mexico, to the late Robert E. and Gwendolyn (Stratton) Longacre.
William spent his childhood on the mission field with his parents and siblings and lived in many parts of the world, including Mexico, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. He had a variety of jobs, including clam shucker, art teacher and construction worker, and he eventually retired from the Portland Press Herald. He continued to work part time at the Lewiston Sun Journal. He was a prolific poet, loved photography and was an artist.
He graduated from the University of Southern Maine in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts in archeology and 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts in art education. He was a member of Court Street Baptist Church, where he enjoyed singing in the choir.
He is survived by his children, Skip (Alyson) of Amesbury, Mass., Narnia (Matt) Krapovicky of Auburn, Benjamin (Erin) of Newark, Ohio, Robert of South Portland, and Rebekah (Steve) of Auburn; grandchildren, Mariah, Kaylah, Jonah, Nathan and Lindsay of Amesbury, Mass., Marcus, Emelia and Braiden Krapovicky of Auburn, Olivia and Isabella of Newark, Ohio, and Fletcher Longacre-Ward of Auburn; brothers, Stephen (Robin) of Grass Valley, Calif., and David (Anne) of Wichita Falls, Texas; a niece and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Roberta Olbrantz.
