This is in response to the over-the-top ProPublica story about misuse of coumadin in some nursing homes which was printed prominently on the Sun Journal’s front page and continued to another practically entire page (July 14).
The story included artwork and highlighted the lack of action at some nursing homes that failed to monitor patients’ dosages.
I hope the Sun Journal will share in the responsibility for the harm that the article could possibly cause people who do not understand the necessity for taking coumadin and who might stop taking their medication.
That would increase the possibility of a stroke or even death. And, yes, I was a registered nurse for years at a nursing home. Nursing home staff, more often than not, give their patients loving care every day.
Meanwhile, I will point out that, also in the July 14 Sun Journal, there was a very brief Associated Press article about how Maine-based Barber Foods was recalling 1.7 million pounds of frozen chicken due to the possibility of salmonella. That article was not on the front page; it was at the bottom of the fourth page in the second section, three paragraphs long.
Fair and balanced presentation of news? I don’t think so.
