CARMEL — The Maine Attorney General’s Office is investigating an officer’s shooting of a pedestrian armed with a “homemade weapon” that happened Sunday morning on Route 2 in Carmel, according to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly after 9 a.m., police were dispatched to the area after reports of a “female pedestrian causing damage and threatening passing motorists,” according to a Sunday afternoon news release.

When the deputy arrived, the woman “advanced toward the deputy” with the weapon, police say.

The deputy shot the woman, who was taken to an area hospital, where she was “currently receiving medical care” as of 3 p.m. Sunday. Police didn’t specify which hospital.

Police declined to release the identity of either the woman who was shot or the deputy involved on Sunday. Officials also declined to say what sort of weapon the woman was armed with.

Officers from the sheriff’s department and Carmel Fire personnel blocked off Route 2 from the municipal building to Damascus Road shortly after the shooting. The road remained closed until about 5 p.m.

State police investigators worked with the sheriff’s department to gather evidence at the scene throughout the day. The state police’s mobile crime unit arrived on the scene around 1:15 p.m.

Sheriff’s department officials were meeting with the Attorney General’s office in the municipal building as crews cleared the scene and reopened the road. The Attorney General investigates all officer-involved shootings in the state.

Police said no further information would be released until Monday.
