PERU — Residents voted to approve a $997,685 municipal budget at Tuesday’s referendum ballot, Town Clerk Vera Parent said Tuesday night.

The budget also includes Oxford County’s tax assessment.

Parent said that residents voted in favor of all but three articles. Those articles would have changed the town clerk, treasurer, tax collector, road commissioner and fire chief positions from elected to appointed.

Residents also approved Article 32, which asked residents if they wished to authorize the town’s withdrawal committee to expend $10,000 from surplus to file a petition for withdrawal with the Regional School Unit 10 board of directors.

They approved the article by a 278-140 vote, Parent said.

Parent said that residents approved Article 23, which asked if they wished to approve $10,000 to support operation of the Peru Community Center under the supervision of the Board of Selectmen.

In a three-person race for two Board of Selectmen seats, Selectman Larry Snowman was re-elected to a three-year term with 255 votes. John Witherell was also elected to a three-year term with 154 votes, while Wayne Moore received 128 votes.

Parent was re-elected to a three-year term as Town Clerk, defeating resident Tammy Ferland.
