1925 – 2015
YARMOUTH — Elwin “Scottie” R. Scott, Sr. 89, of Yarmouth, died June 4th peacefully surrounded by his loving wife Verna M. Scott and their family.
He was born in Mexico, Maine on September 1, 1925 the son of the late James and Mary Ellen Scott. He was educated in the Mexico, Maine school system and had a 40 plus year career at the Oxford and Boise Cascade Paper Mills. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII on the USS Washington and participated in the battle of Iwo Jima. Scottie had the distinct honor of playing echo taps for President Roosevelt’s funeral procession. He was well known to many for his expertise in antiques while operating Main Street Antiques with his wife Verna. The business has served the Yarmouth community for over 20 years. Scottie was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yarmouth and the VFW.
There are no words to adequately explain how extraordinary Scottie was, or the way he personally touched each person who crossed his path. He never met a person who did not quickly become a friend. He had a special ability to connect to any person or situation with profound “storytelling” that would deliver exactly the right message at the right time. Scottie, Dad, Grampa will be sadly missed by all those who had the pleasure of spending time with him, his presence and laughter will never be replaced.
He was preceded in death by his dearest granddaughter Katie Scott, his parents and his five brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his loving wife Verna Scott and their beloved cat, Maggie. His children and their families include: Glenn and Kim Scott of Auburn, Victoria and grandson James Hill, Kelly Samson-Rickert of N. Yarmouth grandchildren Alexandra, Scottie, and David; Kathleen Scott of Scarborough grandsons Billy and Sean, Elwin “Scottie” Jr. and Lisa Scott of Lewiston, grandchildren Ashley and Tyler; Kevin L. Scott and his wife Susan Merrow of Andover. A sister Beverly and husband John Jannace of Cumberland, and a sister Marion LaBrecque of Florida; as well as many nieces and nephews.
