PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — An animal shelter volunteer sustained minor injuries when a van carrying dozens of puppies and cats overturned on Interstate 95 in New Hampshire on Thursday morning.

WMUR reported that the animals — which, rescuers said, all appeared to be fine — were being transported between animal shelters in Pennsylvania and Maine.

The van was headed for the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society in Lewiston, and by 5:30 p.m. the animals had arrived, had been checked and were being bedded down for the night.

According to shelter Operations Manager Zach Black, the final destination for all of the animals was Lewiston. They will be kept at the shelter for between five and seven days before becoming available for adoption. Black said all will be available for adoption after that hold period.

State police estimate that 50-60 animals were on board. According to Black, none sustained serious injury.

The New Hampshire Society for the Protection of Animals took the animals to Stratham to be checked out immediately after the crash, before they were taken to Lewiston.
