CANTON — Two public hearings will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 28, prior to the regular selectmen meeting in the Town Office.
The first hearing is for the annual town referendum. Administrator Scotty Kilbreth said Wednesday afternoon that it is about municipal housekeeping items, such as setting a date for when property taxes are due and requiring the treasurer to be bonded by a reliable bonding company.
For the second hearing, Natalie Sneller of Canton will discuss the petition for Canton to start withdrawal proceedings from Regional School Unit 10.
The former School Administrative District 21 towns of Dixfield, Canton, Peru and Carthage have circulated petitions asking for a vote to form a four-member committee to work on withdrawal negotiations and to appropriate money to fund the cost of negotiations, research and analysis of withdrawal agreements.
The Peru and Canton petitions asked for $10,000 each, while the Carthage petition asked for $8,000.
Under old business, the board will continue work on resident Chris Dailey’s complaint given to selectmen on May 7 about what he called the town’s mishandling of petitions filed by 47 residents calling themselves the Alliance for Accountability.
At that meeting, Dailey said they asked that the petitions be posted in the Canton Crier and the town newsletter two weeks before the June 2014 town meeting. He said selectmen at that time refused to publish them because the Maine Municipal Association had told town officials they didn’t have to do so.
When asked by Board of Selectmen Chairman Donny Hutchins what he wanted done, Dailey asked the board to draft a policy. Selectmen agreed to research the matter and will address it Thursday night.
Additional old business items include discussions on issuing scholarships, gating Meadowview Road to prevent people from tearing it up with pickup trucks and mudding tires during the spring and burn permits.
Among new business items, selectmen are expected to sign the town meeting warrant and the RSU 10 budget warrant, as well as discuss the Staples Hill Road project, a request from April Hunt to use the Wee House driveway, the Board of Appeals and a change to the transfer station budget.
