RUMFORD — The Rumford and Mexico historical societies will team up for the second year in a row for a plant sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 23 and 24.

Nghia Ha, a member of the Rumford society, said she and her husband have been organizing plant sales for the society for the past 18 to 20 years.

“Ninety percent of the plants for the sale come from my yard,” Ha said. “I’ve got over 200 potted plants and 200 tomato plants. One of my good friends is potting stuff from her garden, and my sister is a professional landscaper, so we have some professional-looking containers to put the plants in.”

She said the societies used to hold plant sales on separate days, but decided to work together to raise money for their organizations.

“We both need fundraisers to keep the society going, so we decided the best thing to do was team up,” Ha said.

Both societies worked together on other events, including the Maine Memory Network, she said.

The plant sale has become the Rumford society’s top fundraiser, with the 2014 sale raking in approximately $3,000, Ha said.

“This year, we’re hoping for around $4,000 or $5,000,” she said.

Ha said the Rumford society is hoping to raise enough money pay for painting their building at Rumford Center, while the Mexico society is in need of Internet service.

“The Mexico Historical Society still doesn’t have Internet, so we’re hoping some of the fundraising money can go toward that,” Ha said.
