NEWRY — Selectmen unanimously approved Code Enforcement Officer Dave Bonney’s draft policy Tuesday night for establishing a Roads Committee to enhance the town’s ability to maintain and support the integrity of the roads.
“The idea is to make them safe and convenient for motor vehicles and other vehicles,” Selectman Jim Largess said.
Bonney told the board that now that the town has plans to repair or reconstruct town roads, it makes sense to assemble an advisory committee to do preassessment work.
“It’s a great idea,” Largess said.
Then, when Bonney said it would consist of five people, Largess said it doesn’t have to be an odd-number group to vote on matters, because they are an advisory group appointed by and serving selectmen. He suggested making Bonney one of the five and appointing four volunteers.
So the board appointed Bonney to the committee along with Tink Conkrite, Bruce Pierce, Alan Fleet and engineer Jim Sysko.
In other business, the board unanimously approved Wendy Polanski as a new member of the Planning Board, and approved giving quarter-share time-share condominium unit owners 25 percent off their assessed valuation before taxes are assessed.
“I think it’s the right thing to do,” Largess said.
Administrator Loretta Powers said the discount doesn’t include association fees, which Sunday River Ski Resort handles.
