SOUTH PORTLAND – Another blow for a South Portland mom waiting for a kidney transplant.

WGME reported Christine Royles, a 23-year-old who made headlines when she put an ad on the back of her car looking for a kidney, posted on Facebook that doctors told her she is too sick right now to have the operation.

A total stranger, Josh Dall-Leighton from Windham, responded that he was willing to donate. But then, another unexpected delay came from an online fundraising campaign to help Dall-Leighton.

The fundraising efforts raised almost $50,000. However, doctors say medical costs for donors are about only $6,000, and federal law prohibits anyone from making a profit off from selling their organs.

Maine Medical Center called the issue “unprecedented,” which has led to a delay while the hospital reviews legal and ethical concerns.
