AUGUSTA — Republican Gov. Paul LePage has postponed a meeting with reporters to discuss additional law enforcement positions to address the state’s drug problem.

The decision to postpone Tuesday’s press conference came moments before the governor announced that he had fired Brig. General James Campbell of the Maine National Guard.

LePage was supposed to speak about his budget plan, which funding for four new district court judges, seven investigative agents in the Department of Public Safety and four new assistant attorney general positions.

He says those resources are needed to help combat the growing drug problem, which poses an increasing threat to Maine’s public safety.

Democrats have raised concerns that LePage’s efforts won’t truly address the problem because there isn’t enough focus on drug treatment.
