What do you do about a misplaced street — especially when it has been in the wrong location for years? The question came up at Monday night’s meeting of the Lewiston Board of Public Work when the Franklin Company pointed out that Bartlett Street is 500 feet east of where it should be. According to records of the land-holding corporation, land for Bartlett Street was deeded to the city many years ago beginning at a point 975 feet from Lisbon Street on East Avenue, but it wound up 1,475 feet from Lisbon Street. It wasn’t indicated whether the city built the street in the wrong location or the deed was in error.

A 37-year-old Auburn man was arrested and charged with the theft of a pocketbook from a grocery cart Tuesday evening after he was cornered and wrestled to the ground by 16-year-old store employee. Timothy Ervin of Auburn, a bagger at the Sabattus Street Shop ‘n Save, said he was walking back toward the store after having loaded some groceries into a car when he saw a man run by with a pocketbook stuffed in his jacket. “Then this lady yelled, ‘He took my purse!’,” Ervin said. Ervin chased the man through the parking lot and behind dumpsters used to collect donated clothes, when the man dropped the purse. They then ran across East Avenue. He said the man turned and punched him in the face after he managed to corner him outside the Elizabeth Ann gas station. “He hit me in the face and knocked my glasses off,” Ervin said, his cheek showing a large red bruise. He wrestled the man to the ground. “After he hit me in the face I just lost all coolness,” Ervin said.
