The liberal Democrats frequently use the terms “rich” or “wealthy” as opposed to “middle class” or “working class,” and the opposite of “poor” or “vulnerable.” They don’t seem to define those terms in dollars, hoping to inflame class resentment in one’s mental image or imagination. The status of a person economically usually depends on the choices that person made earlier in life.

The Democratic critics of Republican economic proposals say they are “benefiting the rich.” This is often the Democrats’ interpretation of laws that stimulate business. Small businesses are well known to be the backbone of the economy. Are they the “wealthy” to whom the Democrats refer? Who has the most jobs for working men and women?

Therefore, it would behoove the Democrats to clearly define dollar limits for who they think is “wealthy” and who isn’t. After that, tell us how many “wealthy” are in Maine paying Maine taxes.

The Republicans have already taken 60,000 low-income citizens off the tax rolls. Taxes were reduced for others. Further tax reductions are being proposed which will be attractive to those who can provide jobs for Maine citizens. It is an opportunity for prosperity.

An opportunity also exists to lower the tax revenue requirement. There should be an efficiency study of government function so waste can be eliminated. I hope that will take place.
