RUMFORD — Students at Holy Savior Catholic School will visit several local businesses and town departments to present homemade cookies Tuesday, Jan. 27, as part of Maine Catholic Schools Week.
Principal Barbara Pelletier said that many years ago, Holy Savior Catholic School would have students’ parents make cookies, and the students would hand them out to businesses to show their appreciation.
“At a certain point, we stopped doing it, but this year, some of the older kids remembered doing it and asked if we could bring that service project back,” Pelletier said. “The students always had a good time visiting the different businesses around town.”
Pelletier said preschool students will take cookies to Concord Apartments; first- and second-grade classes, Rumford Hospital; third- and fourth-graders, Rumford Fire Station, Police Department and Dunkin’ Donuts; and the fifth-grade class, Rumford Public Library.
Among the other events the school will participate in during Maine Catholic Schools Week are a Spirit Day pep rally Monday, Jan. 26, an open house Thursday, Jan. 29, and a visit to Black Mountain to ski and snow tube Friday, Jan. 30.
Pelletier said Maine Catholic Schools Week is a national event and each school chooses events celebrate.
According to a news release by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, the Cookie Drop Off is part of a weeklong effort by Maine’s Catholic schools to “evangelize students by nourishing faith and encouraging academic excellence while accentuating the importance of community and service in a nurturing environment.”
