RUMFORD — The Board of Selectmen voted Thursday evening to grant a waiver to Sunday River Farms to transport perishable produce over posted roads in the spring, Town Manager John Madigan said Friday.
Madigan said the Maine Department of Transportation and the Public Works Department sometimes posts weight restrictions on roads in the spring, when they begin to thaw.
“During the day, the weather will get warm and the ice thaws, and during the night, it freezes again and does all sorts of things to the road,” Madigan said. “By posting the road, it makes it illegal for certain trucks to travel on those roads.”
Every year, Sunday River Farms comes before the Board of Selectmen to request a waiver so it can drive on a short section of road to reach their potato storage.
“The farm has to use a small section of those side roads in order to reach their storage on Whippoorwill Road, so every year, we issue them a waiver so they can reach it,” Madigan said.
He also reminded the Rumford board that three public forums to discuss RSU 10 buildings are scheduled as follows:
* Wednesday, Jan. 28, 6:30 p.m. Mountain Valley High School, Rumford.
* Monday, Feb. 2, 6:30 p.m., Dirigo High School, Dixfield.
* Tuesday, Feb. 10, 6:30 p.m., Buckfield Junior-Senior High School, Buckfield.
“I wanted to let them know when the different meetings were scheduled for, because it’s an important issue to the area,” Madigan said.
In other business, selectmen voted to approve taxicab licenses for Mountain Valley Taxi Service, Private Taxi, EZ Taxi and Veterans Taxi.
