NEWRY — Emergency officials responded to a rescue call at Sunday River just after 1 p.m. on Friday.

A LifeFlight ambulance was originally called to the scene, but called off after several minutes. Instead, the patient — a man whose age was not immediately available —  was treated by a PACE ambulance crew at the mountain.

About 15 minutes later, the helicopter was re-called to meet PACE at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, where the patient was transferred to the helicopter minutes after 2 p.m.. He was then transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Sunday River Spokeswoman Sarah Devlin said the man suffered a cardiac arrest in the lodge at the resort.

According to Devlin, the incident was not connected in any way to the Red Bull Frozen Rush Head to Head Racing Finals at South Ridge being held Friday afternoon as part of the resort’s College Week events.
