WOODSTOCK — The Oxford County Gem and Mineral Association will host its second open house at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Franklin Grange to appraise and identify gems and minerals.

Members with experience in identifying and appraising gems and minerals will be in attendance, President Ken Briggs said. “We have about 130 members in the group. Some are from Florida, some are from Vermont, and some are from California.”

There will also be jewelry and other items on sale.

“Last year, we had a terrible ice storm and still had 30 people show up,” he said. “I’m not sure how many we’re going to get this year. We do everything we can to try and get the townspeople in here.”

The open house is something he’d like to continue, he said. “If I was able to expand the core group of people that do the work, I’d definitely do it.”

Briggs said the annual members-only dinner will be held after the open house.

“Historically, we hold our annual dinner at restaurants, but we got sick of the food and rush hour so we started looking somewhere else,” Briggs said. “We had some connections with the Grange, so we figured this way, the Grange can make a little money, and we won’t have to drive as far for our dinner if there’s an ice storm.”
