SOUTH PORTLAND — Based on the 2003 film by the same name, “Calendar Girls” tells the story of a group of extraordinary women who persuade one another to pose for a charity calendar — in the nude.

Overcoming their initial reservations, the friends put modesty aside and, with strategically placed cakes, knitting work and floral arrangements, become a global phenomenon. But as media interest snowballs, the “Calendar Girls” find themselves exposed in ways they had never expected.

“Calendar Girls” is one of the most successful shows in British history. Rights for use of the play are limited; there are only 10 licenses in the U.S. this year, and Portland Players is the first to stage the show.

“Calendar Girls” runs Jan. 30-Feb. 15. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday matinees are at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, $15 for children and students with ID.
