PORTLAND (AP) — Maine state police say 2014 was the safest year on Maine highways in seven decades.
State police spokesman Steve McCausland says 128 people died in highway traffic crashes last year. He says that is the lowest number of highway traffic crash deaths since 1944. McCausland says the two safest prior years were 2011 and 1959. Both of those years had 136 highway traffic crash deaths.
The state’s traffic crash data for 2014 is not yet finalized and will be made official on Jan. 31.
