Today the ground will be broken for the large addition to the Hill Mill and preparations have been made to push the work along as fast as possible.

Just when the new mill will be completed is not known, but if the present plans are carried out there will be no delays.

The addition of the annex will be about 165 feet in length and about 77 feet in width and will serve as a connecting link between the two buildings, making a building about 500 feet long.

With the completion of this new section the capacity of the mill will be increased by 25,000 more spindles and will furnish employment to about 400 additional hands.

50 years ago, 1959

Lewiston’s Board of Education has named Norm Parent baseball coach at LHS for the 1959 season.

Athletic Director Mose Nanigian, who normally handles the assignment, asked to be relieved of the duties on advice of his physician following a siege of pneumonia last February. Parent is also head coach of football and hockey.

25 years ago, 1984

Central Maine families forced from their homes by flood waters began returning Sunday, and most roads were reported open as the Androscoggin and Kennebec rivers returned to safe levels.

“They’re all in the banks right now so there’s no problem with flooding.” said Charlie Foley, a weather service specialist with the National Weather Service in Portland.

The rivers reached their height Saturday morning and began subsiding later the same day.

Auburn police reported all roads open Sunday night, except Brown’s Crossing Road and Miller Street. All roads in Lewiston were reported open, including River Road, which was cleared Sunday morning.
