If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, you probably know that the garage makes a great workshop. The only problem is that for some reason your spouse wants to park in the middle of your valuable shop space. Here’s a solution: a full-size, wall-mounted workbench that folds up into a neat, 13-inch-deep package. It even has space for a built-in light and plenty of storage shelves.
Made primarily from plywood, 2-by-4 lumber and some basic hardware, the project is simple to build. Just measure, cut out the pieces and assemble using nails, screws and glue. To finish, install the hardware, bolt the unit to wall studs and add a fluorescent light fixture.
The workbench is as easy to use as it is to build. To close, fold the lightbox down, remove the cross braces from the legs, lift the benchtop and latch into place. Fold the legs into the bottom of the benchtop, shoot the bolt and slide the cross braces in behind the legs. To open, simply reverse the steps.
When open, the workbench measures about 72 inches long by 34 inches deep by 74 inches tall. It folds up to about 72 inches long by 13 inches deep by 34 inches tall.
The Space-Saver Workbench plan, No. 916, is $9.95 and includes step-by-step instructions with photos, full-size traceable patterns, construction diagrams, a cutting layout and a shopping list and cutting schedule.
A package of workbench projects, No. C150, is $16.95 and includes this plan plus a plan for a woodworking bench. A catalog picturing hundreds of do-it-yourself projects is $2.00. Prices include postage and handling. Please allow about four weeks for delivery (for rush delivery, add $1 per item up to $3 maximum and allow about two weeks).
