AUGUSTA (AP) — Former President George H.W. Bush and former first lady Barbara Bush are endorsing Maine Gov. Paul LePage in his re-election bid.
In a statement Wednesday, the Bushes called LePage a “get-it-done-leader” who’s committed to solving Maine’s problems.
They applauded his effort to eliminate the state’s hospital debt and said they “strongly support his bid for another four well-deserved years.”
LePage is running against Democrat Mike Michaud and independent Eliot Cutler.
Cutler, who’s trailing in the polls, picked up the endorsement of the Portsmouth Herald and the Bangor Daily News this week. The BDN said Cutler would bring “needed dignity and a reasonable, business-like approach to the governor’s office.”
Michaud is also getting some big-name support. President Barack Obama is scheduled to campaign for the Democrat next Thursday.
