LOWER CUPSUPTIC TOWNSHIP — A New York man was injured Monday when his .45 caliber gun went off and a bullet went through his hand, Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service said.

The 66-year-old man was at a shooting range when what is believed to be an accidental shooting occurred, he said.

Warden Reggie Hammond, who is investigating the incident, met up with the man near Rangeley. An ambulance was also called to the area.

The injury is believed to be non-life threatening, MacDonald said.

The name of the man, who has no family in the area, is not being released until his immediate family is notified, he said.

The man was taken by a NorthStar EMS ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington to be treated, he said.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the Rangeley area. The Warden Service would not typically investigate this type of incident because it is not hunting related, but they were the closest agency to Lower Cupsuptic Township in northern Oxford County.

The shooting may later be investigated by a law enforcement agency in Oxford County, he said.
