GORHAM — The popular Faculty Concert Series at the University of Southern Maine School of Music will open the fall season at Corthell Concert Hall, USM Gorham campus, with a trio of celebrated Maine-based musicians: Anastasia Antonacos, USM artist faculty in piano, Ben Noyes, cello, and Patrick Doane, violin.

Spanning three centuries, “240 Strings” will feature Franz Joseph Haydn’s Piano Trio in G Major, Robert Schumann’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor, Opus 63, and Maurice Ravel’s Piano Trio in A Minor.

“Each piece is from a very different stylistic period,” said Antonacos. “There is an element of poise that ties them all together. There is a fun quality to the Haydn and to the Ravel. In the Schumann piece, there is sweeping romanticism – almost a stream of consciousness at times.”

While both Doane and Noyes have performed previously at the USM School of Music, this concert marks the first performance of the three musicians together. The three describe their program as a substantial musical meal of sorts, with the staples of sweetness at the beginning and end and featuring a savory selection in the middle.

“The Schumann piece,” said Doane, “was written between the Hadyn and the Ravel works. It is more tempestuous, romantic, earthy and gritty.”

The Haydn Piano Trio in G Major, composed in the late-18th century, is also known as the “Gypsy Rondo” because of its Hungarian-style rondo finale. The Schumann Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor, Opus 63, was written in the late-19th century, and the Ravel Piano Trio in A Minor, composed in the early-20th century, is considered a technical masterpiece.

“The performance is more athletic than you would think,” said Noyes. “There is a lot of shifting of mood from measure to measure.”
