PORTLAND — Two Brunswick men charged with conspiracy to defraud the Internal Revenue Service plan to skip a scheduled date in U.S. District Court because they don’t recognize the federal court system.

David E. Robinson and F. William Messier are scheduled to appear in court in Portland on Friday following their indictment last month.

They said in their responses to the indictment that they don’t recognize the courts.

The 75-year-old Robinson in an email to the Portland Press Herald calls himself the “Interim Attorney General of the Maine Republic Free State Trust” and “Founder of the Unified Maine Common Law Grand Jury.”

Prosecutors allege the 70-year-old Messier has not filed a federal tax return since 1997.

Prosecutors say if the men do not appear, warrants for their arrest could be issued.
