Why is it that some people, who have been granted the privilege of driving a motor vehicle in this state, refuse to take responsibility for damage they do to other people’s property?

After parking well within my space and going into an Auburn business on Labor Day to conduct a short business transaction, I returned to my car to discover that someone had struck the left rear quarter panel, doing damage amounting to hundreds of dollars. Of course, whoever it was didn’t wait or even identify himself (as required by law), and no bystander bothered to report the incident.

I wouldn’t even be angry if the driver owned up to the damage — accidents do happen. But I can’t understand why people do this all the time and think nothing of driving away, leaving the car owner with an unneeded and unanticipated expense.

The driver must have known that he hit my car. He was just cowardly and irresponsible in that instance.
