1922 – 2014

TOPSHAM — Evelyn C. McIver, 92, of Topsham, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, at home with her loving family at her side, after a long illness.

She was born in Alburgh, Vt., on May 29, 1922, a daughter of the late Elwin and Ina Belle (Bohanan) James.

Evelyn married her true love, James McIver, on Nov. 19, 1943, and together, they raised their family and ran a dairy farm; he predeceased her on Feb. 22, 1993. She also worked in her younger years at Bath Iron Works during World War II and at Worumbo Mill. After her children left home, she picked apples at Benoit’s Orchard.

She enjoyed gardening, baking, crocheting and knitting. She would make 100 pairs of mittens every year for the Salvation Army. She also knitted lap blankets for the Catholic Charities of Maine for several years; Evelyn just stopped doing this last week. She truly loved her family and having family gatherings.

Evelyn leaves a daughter, Marilyn Gargiulo and husband, Stephen, of Topsham; a son, Herbert McIver and his companion, Carol Kyllonen, of Florida; a daughter-in-law, Arlene McIver, of Bowdoin; a sister, Phyllis Holbrook, of Vermont; three brothers, Vernon James and wife, Elaine, of Vermont, Leonard James and wife, Sharon, of Vermont and Allyn James and wife, Pauline, of Vermont; eight grandchildren, Laurie Burnette of West Bath, Andrew DelGaudio of Massachusetts, Stephen McIver of Lisbon Falls, Erica McIver of Bowdoin, Carrie McIver of Massachusetts, Larry McIver of Brunswick, Buffy Gregory of Missouri and Amy McIver of Missouri; two great-granddaughters, Rebecca Byron and Amber Gordon; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Larry McIver; a sister, Katherine Paquette; and two brothers, Eldon James and Alton James.
