NEWRY — As of Tuesday, 75 runners have signed up to participate in the O2X Summit Challenge on Sept. 27 at Sunday River Ski Resort.
The race is a mountain running experience that blends trail running and creative natural challenges with a summit finish, according to a recent news release.
“We are expecting a lot more registrants, because it’s still really early and participants can actually sign up on the day of the race,” Casey Butler, resort communications coordinator, said Tuesday by email.
The top men and women finishers will vie for a $1,500 prize purse, while seasonal point winners can earn an additional $1,000.
“The new O2X Challenge at Sunday River is the perfect addition to our fall event calendar and its participants will be rewarded not only with a fantastic trail race, but also unsurpassed views given the time of year and mountaintop finish line,” Caroline Ochtera, events marketing manager for Sunday River, said.
In addition to the Sunday River event, venues in the O2X Summit Challenge series include Sugarbush Resort in Warren, Vt., on Sept. 13; Loon Mountain in Lincoln, N.H., on Oct. 18; and Windham Mountain in Windham, N.Y., on Oct. 25.
O2X Summit Challenge courses are rated on a unique diamond grading system. Single Diamond routes gain at least 1,000 net vertical feet in at least four miles. Double Diamond routes gain at least 2,000 vertical feet in up to eight miles. All courses will blend single-track trails, double-track dirt roads, glades, rock scrambles and open slopes.
