Free community barbecue

LIVERMORE FALLS — A free community barbecue will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the American Legion Hall, 17 Reynolds Ave.

The meal, hosted by Emmanuel Assembly of God in Livermore Falls, is held on the second Saturday of each month.

Library program on Roman coins

WAYNE — “Coins of the Roman Empire” will be presented by Richard McAlee from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the Williams House, 14 Old Winthrop Road.

The illustrated talk will discuss the coins of the Roman Empire and what they tell us about Roman history.

McAlee, a Washington, D.C. attorney and summer resident of Wayne, is the foremost authority on the coins of Roman Antioch, and has been collecting and studying coins of the Roman Empire for over 40 years.

Richard’s book, “The Coins of Roman Antioch,” won the International Association of Professional Numismatists’ Book of the Year award and serves as the principal reference on coins of this eastern Roman province.

Selected examples from his coin collection will be available for viewing. An informal gathering will follow, with wine and light refreshments. This event is sponsored by the Cary Memorial Library.

Mad Science program at library

NORWAY — Norway Memorial Library will celebrate the conclusion of the Fizz, Boom, Read! summer reading program with Mad Science of Maine’s Fizz, Pop, Boom Science Show. Children ages 6 to 12 and their families are invited to attend this free performance from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at the Guy E. Rowe School.

Children who have participated in the library’s summer reading program will receive certificates and be recognized for their summer reading achievements. The science show will last about an hour and is engaging, entertaining, educational and action-packed.

American Girl tea party planned

MEXICO — Mexico Public Library will host an American Girl Tea Party for girls ages 6-11 at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at the Calvin Lyons Hall, next door to the library.

Those attending will meet American Girls Marie-Grace and Cecile, and travel back in time to the 1850s in New Orleans. These two girls who lived during that era were friends together in the old city.

Girls who attend will work on a craft and participate in activities from that era. A tea party, with real china cups, and light refreshments will be enjoyed by the girls.

Every girl who attends may enter drawings to win two miniature Marie-Grace and Cecile collectible dolls, and also their introductory books, “Meet Marie-Grace” and “Meet Cecile.”

American Girl dolls are invited to attend with their owners. Although not necessary, girls are invited to dress in the style of clothing that was popular for girls in 1850s New Orleans.
