NEWRY — Selectmen will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, to see if residents want to file a petition to withdraw from SAD 44.

The meeting will be held at the Bear River Grange Hall off Route 26.

Administrator Loretta Powers said Wednesday afternoon that petitioners who sought to start the process had the correct number of signatures — 10 percent of the number of Newry voters at the last gubernatorial election. Resident Jim Sysko circulated the petition.

Residents will be asked if they favor filing a petition for withdrawal with the Board of Directors of SAD 44 and the state commissioner of education, authorizing the Withdrawal Committee to spend $50,000 and authorizing the municipal officers to issue notes in the name of the town or otherwise pledge the credit of the town for up to $50,000 for the effort.

Andover, Bethel, Greenwood and Woodstock are also in SAD 44.

At 5 p.m. Aug. 5, selectmen will hold a regular meeting at the Town Office.

Unfinished business listed for discussion and/or updates includes job descriptions for deputy clerk, Bear River Grange Hall maintenance work and school funding.

Powers said that at the last board meeting, selectmen adopted a job description for the town administrator and are now working on one for the deputy clerk.

The Grange hall maintenance will involve discussion about replacing the old furnace with a new one.

The school funding matter pertains to the school withdrawal process.

For new business, the code enforcement officer will update selectmen on roads; the board will discuss replacing the Town Office carpet; and a few abatements will be discussed.

Additionally, Powers said the board needs to discuss whether Newry should go with single-stream recycling at the Tri-Town Transfer Station and whether to get a new compactor there. The three-town transfer station is for Newry, Bethel and Hanover.
