PARIS — Assessors are expected to begin today going door-to-door for a townwide revaluation set to correct mistakes.

The purpose of the revaluation is to fix those discrepancies in a 2007 revaluation which overvalued land and undervalued homes.

Residents may see their property taxes increase, decrease or stay the same based on their specific situation, Paris Tax Assessor Gerald Samson said.

“The land values are really not what they should be,” he said.

It is believed that the previous reassessment in 2007 took incorrect data that tended to balloon land values over those of homes. Samson pointed specifically to mobile homes, whose value may increase as the land value decreases.

After learning of the discrepancies, the town has been saving around $50,000 a year since 2009 in a reserve account to fund the revaluation, Town Manager Amy Bernard previously said.

In March, selectmen hired independent assessor RJD Appraisal for $179,900 to conduct a comprehensive valuation of real estate and determine new values. Samson will work about 10 hours a week, expected to cost another $14,000 over the life of the revaluation.

According to Samson, four licensed appraisers will go door-to-door, asking homeowners for permission to enter and conduct an interior inspection.

For people who aren’t home at the time, a note will be tacked to the door requesting homeowners to contact the town to schedule an appointment.

Appraisers will have identification, Samson said.

The process should be finished by the time selectmen commit taxes in 2015.
