Historical Society meets July 25

OXFORD — The Oxford Historical Society will hold the July meeting at 6 p.m. Friday, July 25. All meetings are held at the Kay House Museum in Oxford Village.

The program for the evening, called “Detecting for History,” will be presented by Gregory Sherwood of Oxford. He has traveled far and wide and has some items and great stories to share.

After the short business meeting and the program, light refreshments will be enjoyed along with a social time.

The Kay House Museum is open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is surprising how much history can be displayed in a late 1880s six-bedroom house.Tours are free, however donations are appreciated.

Open Farm Day at Pietree Orchard

SWEDEN — Pietree Orchard will participate in Open Farm Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 27.

Walking tours (wheelchair accessible and with some lead by a Pietree staff member who uses a wheelchair) will be offered every half hour on the half hour.

Dan Cousins, Pietree’s farm manager and Oxford County representative to the Maine State Farm Bureau, will speak at 10 a.m. on political issues this year in farming and at 1 p.m. will elaborate on issues in soft fruits and vegetable culture.

Scott Miller, Pietree’s orchardist and secretary of the Maine State Pomological Society, will speak at 11 a.m. on issues in orchard husbandry and at 2 p.m. on integrated pest management.

The Maine AgrAbility program will have a display on the services it offers, helping farms be more accessible and people living with disabilities enter farming and farm better and longer.

Waterford summer breakfasts planned

WATERFORD — The third in a series of four summer breakfasts will take place from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, at the Wilkins Community House at the foot of Plummer Hill Road, next to the Waterford Congregational Church.

In its 61st year, the breakfasts offer a menu of freshly baked muffins, scrambled eggs, pancakes, real Maine maple syrup, bacon, sausage, doughnuts, coffee and orange juice. The costs is $7 for adults, $4 for children ages 5 to 10, and free for children under age 5.

Proceeds from the breakfasts contribute to the maintenance of the Wilkins Community House.

The Wilkins House Basement Yard Sale is also held from 7:30 to 11. New items appear at each of the sales. Proceeds go to the Building Improvement Funds of the Wilkins House and the Waterford Congregational Church.

Lewiston Bridge Club winners

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Bridge Club winners at the Lewiston Armory on July 14 were as follows: first, Richard Allen and Richard Balian; second, Larry Fortier and Roger Labbe; third, Debra Gardner and Les Buzzell.

Blueberry Festival in Locke Mills

LOCKE MILLS — The annual Blueberry Festival will be held from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Locke Mills Union Church.

There will be pancakes, sundaes, pies, blueberries and more.

Lobster dinner at Otisfield church

OTISFIELD — On Saturday, Aug. 9, the East Otisfield Free Baptist Church will hold its first Annual Lobster Dinner. Advance ticket sales are only $20 per person; a limit of 76 tickets will be sold.

Seatings are at 4:30 and 6. The menu will be 1 1/2-pound lobster, drawn butter, corn on the cob, coleslaw, homemade rolls, blueberry cake and beverages.
