HARPSWELL — The Rev. Dr. Richard Gelwick of Harpwell died Sunday, June 29, in Harpswell.
Gelwick graduated with a bachelor’s of arts degree from Southern Methodist University in 1952; a master’s of divinity degree from Yale Divinity School in 1956; and a doctor of theology degree from the Pacific School of Religion in 1965. Gelwick was ordained as a minister in 1957.
Throughout his life, Gelwick was a professor, a scholar of Michael Polanyi, a social activist and community organizer. Gelwick and his family were avid sailors, enjoying their home in Cundy’s Harbor in Harpswell.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Beverly Prosser Gelwick; his children, Jennifer Gelwick-Luecke and Greg Luecke, and Allen Morrison Gelwick and Almira Gelwick; grandchildren, Mirelle Gelwick Luecke, Conrad Allen Luecke, Sean Allen Gelwick, Katrina Desireé Gelwick, Allen Garrett Gelwick III, and Aydin Morrison Gelwick; brother, Allen Garrett Gelwick Jr.; sister-in-law, Melinda Prosser; nieces, Marsha Gelwick Swift, Rhonda Prosser Copp, June Prosser, and Susan Gelwick; nephews, Philip Gelwick, Paul Prosser, Rick Copp, and Don Swift; and many great nieces and nephews.
